Hair update/ Rant

Hey guys,

As you know, I was/am contemplating going natural. Well I still have not 100% decided, although I think I did mention I was doing so. I did however, cut my hair. I took of about 4 inches and right now, I am back to shoulder length. I did this because honestly, my hair kept breaking. I thought I was doing so well in March and April, but May came and for some reason something was not working.

Let me walk you through my wash sessions in May.......

As I said in my pervious post, I kept my PS in for a maximum of two weeks or minimum of one week and I moisturised as often as possible. Everything was okay until wash day. The take down was fine. I detangled with my hands and removed as much shed hair as possible. Then came pre poo, and thats where the problem starts. I rake the oils through my hair with my hands trying to coat every strand, as careful as possible and my hair starts falling every where. Those tiny annoying breaks are the ones I got. They were so annoying, but I looked past them. Then comes washing and deep conditioning.

My wash sessions are nice, I wash in sections and loose little too no hair. I air dry for about 10-20mins before deep conditioning, then apply my conditioner generously to my hair in sections too. I have low porosity hair, so steaming is apparently really good for my hair. My roots loves them, but my ends, not so much. After each steam session, I proceed to wash of the conditioner in my hair and then I see those tiny annoying breaks again. Although I find like much less strands than during my pre poo, it is still VERY annoying that I am treating my hair as well as I think I should and I still loose hair without even combing it.

Anyways to cut my story short, I was pissed during my last wash day in June so I cut booked an appointment and went an hour later and got it cut.

I thought about every possible reason. Over moisturising from the steam? My hair does not just like oils? My ends are just too weak? Yep, Settled with the last point. Anyways, its funny cause I do look at my ends closely but I hardly ever see actual splits. Those I see, I cut off immediately. I got my last trim end of November last year so I guess I was really due for a trim. Moral of my story? Splits/dead ends are not necessarily split into two.

Was this cut me easing my transition route? I do not know. But I currently have braids to help aid my 'stretch'. I'll see what happens when I take them down.

I promise to inform you of my decision once I am a 100% sure of what I am doing. Right now I am just nursing my hair back to health and length with the aid of protective styles and Manetabolism.

Thanks for reading my long rant/post?! LOL

Love,
Dumebi. :)

  1. Hello Dumsy, i just read ur story on Jen's blog and decided to visit ur blog, sorry abt ur setback. I also read the article on bellanaija and decided to start a hhj but I started June while u started march *big smile*. Like u, I have had several setbacks from protein overload, excessive hair shedding to drastic breakage.

I recently had my 1yr hairniversary and my stylist went scissors happy with my hair resulting in anoda setback. She said my hair wasn't even but I have learnt that my front hair grows faster dan all oda hairs. I see this latest setback as a clean slate for my ends.

I just want to encourage you to keep on keeping on that's y it is called a hair journey cos It neva ends.

For the breakage, critically analyse wat u did wrong that cld have caused breakage and try to avoid it. Mine was keeping my kinky twist in for too long almost 3months but I consistently washed and conditioned it so am thinking d stylist didn't rinse d shampoo out completely so maybe dat cld have contributed.

All in all look at the bright side, ur hair will still grow and u will knw what to do better.

Best of luck in ur decision making but please don't go natural cos u think it is d way out of ur hair troubles, natural hair breaks too and has setbacks too. Try to learn and know ur hair before u begin another journey.

I don't usually comment on blogs infact, u cant find my comment on any blog but I just had to comment on urs to encourage you cos I knw how frustrating and depressing a setback can be. I will be visiting your blog regularly so try and post o so I knw wats happening in ur 'hairlife' lol.

    Sorry for the long comment

    1. Oh thanks you so much for your comment!! You just put a huge smile on my face.

Happy hairniversary. You are right, its a journey. Even more so, a way of life. Like why neglect your hair? Just like you take care of your body, take care of your hair. Even when I reach my goal, it doesn't stop there. Just like when you lose weight, you dont just go back to bad habits (Cough I should take my own advice on that. LOL).

I have analysed it and I know my ends were really weak. I am not thinking of going natural cos I think its the way out. Quite frankly, the way my natural hair is set up? LOL it is going to be challenging. I have learnt a lot about my hair from this one year and some HHJ I started. I am considering it cos I know I do want to go natural at some point in my life and I am thinking why not now? Just because, something new and interesting. TBH, If I do go natural and I end up really not liking it, I will go back to relaxer.

But hey lets wait and see what happens. 😊

I will try to post more often. Not just for me, but for nice people like you that help motivate. 😊

      Thanks again.
